A lot of businesses unintentionally put themselves first in the eyes of their clients. It’s something I’ve seen many times over the years, but there is one example that really highlighted this for me.
I went to a store right next door to a dentist’s office one day. As I was looking for parking I thought I saw a great spot. I went to park there when suddenly I could see there was a big sign that says it was reserved parking for Dr. So and so. It had a cutesy little tooth logo and was honestly kind of a fun sign. This was however the spot closest to the door. The Dr. wanted to make sure that he had a great parking spot every day. I think we can all understand the desire to have a great space, especially at our own business. The trouble is this meant that his patients would have to take inferior spots. This was a busy business park and I bet the spots close to his door fill up fast, forcing his clients to park far away. It sent the message “I am more important than you”.
This seems like a small issue, and I certainly don’t want to sound like I’m putting this particular dentist on the spot. This is however something I’ve seen in many businesses out there. I always appreciate it when I feel like a business has me as a client as their top priority.
